Scotland's top international event, the Clan Challenge
International, was held in the Bell's Sports Centre, Perth on
November 9th.
This annual event, welcomed the return of John Townsley,
8th Dan Black Belt in Hanshi Karate / Jui Jitsu.
As head coach, brought Team USA Karate. Team USA
participate in and has won the worlds most prestigious
competitions, including seven World kickboxing championships, the
World Pankration Championships, numerous international point
Karate championships and an amazing 14 Gold Medals in the
Goodwill Games of St. Petersburg, Russia. Team USA is America's
foremost Martial Arts organization.
We also
welcomed teams from the London Predators, GBMAA Team Macho from
England and many others from throughout the UK. Also, competing
was the large Scotland Team; recently returned from the World
Championships.
This year's tournament was again an "open to all"
styles competition: categories included semi-contact points and
light continuous contact kumite, Kata (soft and hard forms) and
traditional weapons. This is the first Clan Challenge to include
musical forms and weapons.
There were also Pankration categories
that were an international demonstration event with medals for
all participants. The Clan Challenge in
1999 was the first UK tournament to feature this martial
art.
The standard of competition was extremely high, which in
itself is a tribute to the skill and athletic ability of the
competitors. The Clan Challenge International Team event proved
to be very exciting; being held in a highly charged and noisy
atmosphere with some exceptional fights. The Team Challenge was
won by Team Macho England, the new Clan Challenge 2002 Champions,
silver was taken by Scotland and bronze by USA.
Again, well done to all competitors!
